Raising Awareness on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) by Dr Maggie Mojapelo
Raising Awareness on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
On the 9th day of the 9th month (September), Mediwell Dainfern proudly joined the global community in raising awareness about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). This international awareness day is a poignant reminder of the critical importance of protecting unborn children by educating women, particularly mothers-to-be, about the dangerous and irreversible effects of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
FASD encompasses a range of lifelong physical, cognitive, and behavioral conditions that can result from prenatal alcohol exposure. These disorders, although entirely preventable, have profound consequences on a child’s development, with effects that may range from learning disabilities and speech delays to more severe issues like heart defects, facial anomalies, and problems with coordination. FASD can even impact a child’s ability to socialize, solve problems, or manage their emotions. This is why it is crucial to raise awareness, as understanding and preventing FASD is key to giving every child the best possible start in life.
At Mediwell Dainfern, we are committed to ensuring that our patients are well-informed and supported. Our mission is not only to provide high-quality healthcare but also to empower our patients with essential knowledge. By offering comprehensive health education to women of childbearing age, we aim to significantly reduce the incidence of FASD within our community. Every child deserves a healthy beginning, and it starts with the choices made during pregnancy.
The Impact of Alcohol on Pregnancy
When a pregnant woman consumes alcohol, it crosses the placenta and directly affects the developing fetus. Alcohol can hinder the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the baby, leading to potential harm at any stage of pregnancy—even before a woman knows she is pregnant. No amount of alcohol is considered safe during pregnancy, and the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure can be devastating.
Common effects of FASD include:
- Physical abnormalities such as small head size, facial features, and joint or limb deformities.
- Cognitive impairments that affect learning, memory, attention span, and problem-solving abilities.
- Behavioral issues such as hyperactivity, poor impulse control, and difficulty interacting with others.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for FASD, but it is 100% preventable. The simple choice of abstaining from alcohol during pregnancy can save a child from a lifetime of struggles.
Our Commitment to Healthier Pregnancies
At Mediwell Dainfern, we understand that pregnancy is a journey filled with hope and responsibility. This is why we take our role as healthcare providers seriously—by offering prenatal care that goes beyond medical checkups. We believe that education is a vital part of that care, and our team is here to provide mothers-to-be with accurate information, resources, and support to help make informed decisions about their health and the well-being of their babies.
For expecting mothers, your health and your baby’s future are deeply intertwined. Every decision you make, from the foods you eat to your lifestyle choices, can have a lasting impact on your child’s development. By choosing a healthy lifestyle—one that includes abstaining from alcohol—you are giving your baby the best chance at a bright and healthy future.
